Teachers TV is an independently run, government funded organisation whose mission is to support the professional development of anyone involved with teaching – from trainee teachers to governors.

In addition to the website, Teachers TV programmes are available via various satellite, cable and Freeview channels.

Video is a core part of Teachers TV offering and to ensure it is fulfilling its mission, the organisation has very strict key performance indicators (KPIs) around both the reach and the consumption of online video content.

It is fundamental that the videos and related community tools are easy to find and use, and that the video content is relevant and engaging so that users watch the whole video and get the most out of the resources. Teachers TV found it needed to improve the video player landing page, in particular the presentation of videos and related tools.

We combined user-centred design and creativity to produce an award-winning intranet.

We worked with AstraZeneca and Applied Works, its creative partner, to produce an effective and inspiring digital platform. Following the hugely successful launch of AstraZeneca’s global internet site, we began work with Applied Works to create its global corporate Intranet.

After a period of extensive research into user and business needs, we provided detailed wire frames and information architecture to Applied Works, and provided ongoing user testing throughout the development process.

The completed intranet saw unprecedented levels of employee take up, and was a major part of AstraZeneca’s RAD award-winning ‘best employee communication programme.’

We conducted usability testing on a range of Epson printers as part of an international user research programme.

Epson was keen to get user feedback during the development phase of the interface for a new range of printers. With a very small window available in which to conduct the research, we reacted quickly and organised an agile usability testing event to meet Epson’s tight brief. We managed the entire research process; finding an appropriate venue, setting up testing and interview areas and analysing the results.

We conducted research on sixty participants over a two-day period, using a combination of prototypes, rich media content and detailed interviews. Our expertise in User Centred Design allowed us to process the results more rapidly, delivering accurate, detailed reports for the user interface and product development teams.

Creating a corporate intranet that will stand the test of time.

We spent considerable time collating the needs of the employees through user groups and interviews and examining the existing intranet and current best practice to understand what had worked well in the past, the barriers to use that existed and how content should be organised in the future.

The major output at this stage were representative personas of particular employee groups that would guide the development of the initial solution and could be used by the National Trust for future revisions as requirements changed.

We collated these findings into a range of outputs (including detailed Wire frames, site maps) that would allow Applied Works to develop and launch a successful intranet.

For such a major internal project, it was vital that the completed intranet incorporated extensive future proofing. As such, a great deal of time was put into anticipating the ongoing needs of the different stakeholders around the UK.

After 4 months the National Trust’s brand new contextual Intranet is live.

The prototype tested well requiring a few tweaks to the presentation of certain functionality. Branding is now in line with the National Trust’s new look and feedback from the wider audience has been fantastic.

We are pleased to continue to assist the National Trust with the ongoing development and growth of the Intranet.
